TERRIFIC singer/songwriter Gerry Colvin is heading for the Palace Theatre for his first ever gig in Redditch.

The award-winning artist – his stellar music CV includes co-writing with Alison Moyet, being a John Peel favourite and winning best band with ColvinQuarmby at Fairport’s Cropredy Festival – will be bringing his four-piece outfit to town on Saturday, May 7.

His blend of country, folk, jazz and Americana has won him regular appearances at Glastonbury – where he’s played and compered – as well as the Hancock Award for best live folk act.

And, as many locals may know, he is also the brainchild behind the Knitted Character Folk Festival at The Blue Boar Inn in Temple Grafton, not a million miles from Redditch.

“It’s country folk tinged with jazz and I’ll be bringing my brand new band with me,” said Gerry.

“We’ve got Jerome Davies on double bass, Lyndon Webb on guitar and Trish Power on accordion and she is absolutely brilliant, her backing vocals are terrific and we’re really going on the harmonies and melody.”

They’ll be showcasing Gerry’s latest CD, Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other which came out last Thursday (April 21) as well as songs from his extensive back catalogue, soon to be re-released on a German record label.

So what inspires a man who’s supported Status Quo on their Aquostic Live Tour to rave reviews?

“I love Nick Lowe, he writes perfect songs, and Edwin Collins and people like George Ezra, such great vocals, singer songwriters are the influence, folk, country, poignant and upbeat, they are all in there,” said Gerry.

The Gerry Colvin Band plays The Room Upstairs at the Palace on Saturday, May 7 at 7.45pm. Tickets are £13 on 01527 65203 or at www.redditchpalacetheatre.co.uk .
