60th anniversary of beer festival

REGULARS and visitors at the Rocklands Social Club will be raising a glass to the venue’s 60th anniversary this weekend with a special four-day beer festival.

The event will boast six ciders and 42 beers from far and wide as well as a selection of local ales.

A total of 21 of them have been specially brewed for the festival.

It has been organised by Terry Hodges and Neil Marsh, with support from the Redditch and Bromsgrove branch of CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale).

There will also be a variety of live music taking place over the weekend.

The Rocklands Social Club was started in the previous United Services Club building above a pram shop on Headless Cross, which is now Headless Cross Green.

It has been at its current base since January 25, 1954.

The club’s president Chris Maddocks and members wanted to do something to toast the milestone and chose this bank holiday weekend specifically.

As well as giving more people time to celebrate, it will also coincide with the Headless Cross Orchard’s May Fayre, which takes place on Headless Cross Green on Monday (May 5) between 11am and 3pm. It will feature Maypole dancing, a performance by Arrow Valley Brass Band, heavy horses, a cider tent, local food and craft stalls, face-painting and much more.

The beer festival opens from midday to 11pm today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday), between midday and 10.30pm on Sunday and from midday until the beer runs out on Monday.

Mr Maddocks said: “We want it to be a fantastic weekend for the whole community – everybody will be welcome and there will also be information about membership of the Rocklands Social Club available.”
