Abusive passenger jailed

AN ABUSIVE train passenger has been sentenced to three months behind bars after ignoring an order which banned him using the line.

Matthew Alistair Bayliss, from Quarry Road in Birmingham, was originally given a Criminal Behaviour Order which barred him from travelling on part of the Cross City line between Birmingham New Street and Redditch after committing a catalogue of abuse.

The order, which was given to him by Worcester magistrates on November 24, also tried to stop him from approaching London Midland staff, entering parts of Redditch town centre and from using any car park and platforms at the stations along the line.

The 44-year-old’s offences included assault, racially-aggravated crimes, begging, being drunk, and threatening staff, the public and police officers over a period of two years.

On October 14 he was reported to be abusive on board a train entering Redditch, while on November 8 he was being a nuisance at the booking office and was seen begging outside the station.

But just days after being handed the interim CBO Birmingham Crown Court heard how Bayliss breached some of its conditions on three separate occasions.

And last Friday (December 12) he was eventually jailed for 12 weeks.

Insp Lee Gordon, who leads the Safer Travel Partnership’s policing team, said Bayliss’ behaviour could not be condoned, tolerated or allowed to continue.

“He has caused distress to rail staff and police officers, as well as staff from a number of other organisations, local agencies and many members of the public, who have been subjected to his anti-social and sometimes violent behaviour.”

He added: “It is disappointing that he breached its terms so quickly and that he now finds himself in prison for a period of three months.”
