Amy’s team fancy a long trek for Africa

A CARING graduate from Headless Cross has recruited her family and boyfriend to help her on her path to stamping out poverty in Eastern Africa.

Amy Johnson will put her best foot forward this weekend as she walks from Birmingham to Worcester, accompanied by mum Alison, step-dad John Manners, auntie and uncle Moira and Louis Johnson and boyfriend Jonathan Vincent.

The 22-year-old is hoping to raise £800 before travelling to Africa next month where she will volunteer on a development programme, after getting a place on the Government-funded International Citizen Service (ICS).

She said: “This is an unique opportunity to work alongside people from a different culture who have requested help from young volunteers to fight poverty and make a difference where it’s needed most.

“I’m really excited to get out there.”

Amy will stay in Africa for ten weeks where she will learn about teamwork and leadership. Upon her return, she will undertake an ‘Action at Home Project’, ensuring her new skills will also benefit her local community.

But before the 6,786-mile trip to Africa, Amy and her nearest and dearest will embark on the 30-mile hike to Worcester – all in fancy dress.

The team plans to split the trek across Saturday and Sunday and aims to complete it in a combined time of 12 hours.

Amy added: “Everyone’s been training hard, going on practice walks, and we’re hoping everyone will give generously as a result of our efforts.”
