A BLETCHLEY Park codebreaker held her audience spellbound as she delivered a talk to members of Redditch Rotarians and their guests.
Charlotte ‘Betty’ Webb MBE, now 92, joined the vital service – credited with shortening World War 2 by two years – when she was just 18 and gave a fascinating insight into her life and work as a codebreaker at the gathering at The Abbey Hotel and Golf Club.
The pioneering work of Bletchley Park, kept secret for 30 years after the end of the war, is now familiar to many thanks to books, films, TV programmes and also to the preservation and opening of home itself to visitors.
From these sources, came not only the story of cracking the German ‘Enigma’ codes but also the development of technologies that provided the foundations of the modern day computer industry.
As well as delivering her memories of her time at Bletchley and presenting a selection of articles dealing with the war and history of Bletchley, Betty was also happy to sign copies of her most recent book ‘Secret Postings’ which not only tells of her wartime deeds but also deals with her post-war experience at The Pentagon in Washington.
