Boxers take up big skydive gauntlet

A DYNAMIC boxing duo are set to take to the skies next weekend in aid of children’s charity CLIC Sargent.

Sue Atkinson and Lawrence O’Connor are more used to launching themselves off the ropes of a boxing ring rather than from the open door of an aeroplane thousands of feet in the air – but that is exactly what the brave pair will be doing next Saturday (October 17) over Swindon.

“I’m not really nervous,” Sue said. “Lar is but he’ll be fine – I’ll push him out of the plane if I have to.”

The pair became friends after Sue began training with Lawrence – more commonly known around the town centre as Lar – at his gym, Viking Boxing.

“Neither of us have done anything like this before and we just thought why not,” Sue, an Alvechurch resident, added. “We are up for anything and it’s for a great cause.”

With 10 children and young people in the UK diagnosed with cancer every day, CLIC Sargent provides clinical, practical and emotional support to youngsters and their families.

Sue and Lar are no strangers to fund raising with Lar having completed a 160 mile bike ride to Weston in the past and Sue trying to sign the duo up to the country’s biggest sky dive back in June.

“Unfortunately we didn’t register in time and our last attempt was postponed due to bad weather but we are ready for it now,” she added.

You can support the pair by dropping in Viking Boxing, in Millsborough House, any time during the day and giving a donation.
