Campaign blasts delays in report

Redditch Editorial 26th Mar, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

THE Save the Alex campaign has blasted the ‘faceless bureaucrats’ delaying the publication of a critical report into the future of health services at the Redditch Hospital.

The report, into the viability of the prefered option into the future running of the Alex, has repeatedly been delayed and now won’t see the light of day until after the General Election on May 7, with health bosses citing the election as the reason.

However Neal Stote, chairman of the Save the Alex Campaign suspects that, in the wake of four A&E consultants resigning over the proposed changes to their department, a major re-think is going on at NHS England. into plan, known as ‘modified option one’.

The emergency consultants handed in their notices because they considered the proposed changes, put forward by Worcester Hospitals Acute NHS Trust, would result in a service that wasn’t safe for patients.

“The delay of the release of this report can only suggest that it rips it pieces, and I think the trust, instead of listening to its own consultants and working out why these changes won’t work went after them in a witchhunt instead.” said Mr Stote.

“From the political point of view if this report says that modified option one works then that is what we get and it goes out to public consultation, however if it says it doesn’t then that’s a complete game changer.”

Rebecca Blake, Redditch parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party added: “The publication of this report will be delayed for at least seven weeks. In five weeks we will begin to lose those consultants in our A&E so this delay is important for the long-term sustainability of A&E at the Alex.

“This report may be politically sensitive but we have waited three years for this to be resolved and we should not delay it for one day nor one week, the health of the people of Redditch is too important.”
