A SPECIAL guest from the Polish Embassy was on hand for the re-opening of the Polish Club in Oakly Road, Redditch recently.

The club, which originally opened 42 years ago, had been closed for the last five but following a surge in interest has been revamped and re-opened.

Guest of honour included Renata Wasilewska from the Polish Embassy in London as well as outgoing Mayor Councillor Pattie Hill and Coun Bill Hartnett, the leader of Redditch borough council.

The club was originally formed by Polish residents who had joined in the fight against Fascism in Europe in the Second World War and who had settled in the town and many of those people were on hand to enjoy the celebrations which included singing and dancing and a bouncy castle for the children.

Certificates were presented to Couns Hartnett and Hill as a token of thanks to the people of Redditch who had welcomed the newcomers.

There were also certifcates of appreciation and gratitude for older Polish residents who had raised the money to build, run and maintain the Polish Club and Polish heritage after World War II.

Coun Hartnett said: “The Polish community have long been a part of Redditch and the re-opening of the club is a landmark event so I was delighted to receive the invitation.”
