'Channel' swim for children's hospital

REDDITCH Swimming Club members will be making a splash this Sunday (September 6) when they attempt to swim across the Channel – and back – without leaving the borough in just two hours.

It’s all part of a fund raising event in aid of Birmingham Children’s Hospital with a target set of £1,000 – with all the proceeds being match-funded by Wesleyan Assurance.

“Each and every one of our swimmers are really going to have to exert themselves – it is by no means a given,” said club deputy chairman Paul Hartland.

The event takes place at the Abbey Stadium swimming baths from 4pm to 6pm and will cover 42 miles (67.5 kilometres) or 2,704 lengths of the baths.

The pool has just six lanes so it promises to be a noisy and exciting event.

“The target is £1,000 but we really hope to smash that,” said Paul, “it all depends on how many swimmers line up on the day.

“At the end we’ll have a picnic outside just to say thank you to all our swimmers.”

Redditch Swimming Club has over 200 members and regularly punches above it’s weight in competition as well as offering swimming for all ages and abilities.
