Clothes swap event aims to help families

DEPUTY Mayor Councillor Joe Baker is urging families across Redditch to unite in the face of the current economic climate.

The Labour councillor is appealing for parents to donate unwanted school uniforms to the clothes bank at the Old County Court building on Church Road as part of a clothing swap which will take place next Saturday (August 8).

“It’s an opportunity for parents to come down and swap children’s uniform and shoes,” Coun Baker said. “In this economic climate all families will need help and Labour in Redditch are working to help those who may be struggling in these tough times.”

The project will enable less-fortunate Redditch children to have uniforms which other youngsters no longer need.

“I myself was brought up in severe poverty,” the deputy mayor added. “My mother relied heavily on jumble sales and hand me down clothes, so I appreciate the importance of having a decent uniform when going to school and not standing out as different from the rest of the children.”

The clothing bank is currently seeking shoes for teenagers and if the event next weekend is a success, Coun Baker hopes the swap will become a monthly fixture.

Anyone wanting to make a clothing donation can do so at Annaliz Vintage on the ground floor of the Old County Court, which will host the swap, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

During the event, which starts at 10am, Bailiffs Café will also be open and offering refreshments to families.
