HEWELL Bowling Club celebrated its 100th birthday with a special match against top players from across the country.
The Tardebigge based club marked its centenary year with a visit from Bowls England at the start of July where a commemorative tree was planted.
The Holyoakes Lane site was first founded in 1941 by the Earl of Plymouth who lived at Hewell Grange and had the green laid for local residents to enjoy.
As part of its celebrations St Fagans Bowling Club, who are from the Earl’s other estate near Cardiff and played Hewell at the opening of the green in 1914, played the team again losing 132 to 177.
Their captain, Clare Collett, also unveiled a special centenary clock.
Also planned for this year are visits from teams including the Barbarians and Midland Counties Association.
The Imps – a team made up of players from counties in the Midlands and East Anglia- will also play against Hewell in September where the president will be asked to bury a time capsule.
New members for both the men’s and ladies’ teams are invited to try out, whether they are beginners or experienced.
