A STUDLEY cyclist is embarking on a gruelling challenge tomorrow (June 27) all in the name of his community’s First Responders.
Steev Ellson, director of Brock Charles Architects, will ride over 150 miles, climbing over 4,500 metres, from Seascale in the west to the east coast of Whitby.
The iconic coast to coast route will take Steev from the mountainous Lake District, through the Yorkshire Dales, across the Vale of York and finally into the Northern Valleys of the North York Moors.
“I am looking forward to it,” he said. “The furthest I have cycled before is around 125 miles but that was back in 2008 so this should be interesting.”
The road ride, cycled by hundreds of people every year, is usually completed over four to five days but Steev will push himself and aims to cross the finish line on the same day he started.
“The six of us riding hope to complete it in around ten hours,” he said.
“My main apprehensions are Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass as it is quite steep at 33 percent incline.”
Both roads have been described as the most outrageous roads in England, with Hardknott often described as the most difficult in Britain.
Steev related how the idea to ride for Studley First Responders came after his neighbour’s daughter required urgent help following the birth of her first baby.
“They were the first on the scene, “he said, “their quick arrival prevented the emergency becoming more serious and that was the inspiration to cycle across the country. We need to keep the volunteer Responders available to the community.”
