THE MP for Redditch, Karen Lumley says she now fully supports Theresa May for leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister.
The MP had previously expressed her backing for Mrs May rival Andrea Leadsom.
However following the news earlier today (Monday, July 11) that Mrs Leadsom had decided to withdraw from the contest, Mrs Lumley said: “Of course I am disappointed that Andrea has decided to withdraw from the Tory leadership contest. She is a great friend of mine and I have recently been heavily involved in campaigning on her behalf.
“However I also understand the pressure that candidates can come under and the intense scrutiny that this post attracted, and I respect her decision.
“Theresa May is of course also a very strong and knowledgeable candidate with the support of the majority of MPs, and I am delighted that the next Prime Minister of this great country will once again be a woman – for only the second time in history.
“Theresa is experienced and respected on the world stage and I am confident that she will be able to steer the Conservative Party and our country onto greater things, as well as to handle the complex negotiations that will be required following the Brexit vote.”
