Donations worth the weight

GENEROUS shoppers have donated food weighing as much as a black rhinoceros to help feed those in need in the borough.

Collections took place over two days at Tesco Express in Oakenshaw and saw 1.4 tonnes of food donated which will now be distributed by Redditch Food Bank to those struggling to afford to eat.

A collection day also took place for the food bank in Catshill with 740kg donated. Both collections were topped up by 30 per cent by the supermarket giant meaning shoppers’ kind-hearted gifts will help provide 6,624 meals to the needy.

Rev Robin Baker, chairman of Redditch Food Bank, thanked the team at Tesco for the opportunity to collect in store.

“Redditch does have a lot of people who care about the people in this town,” he added.

Molly Beck, Better Service Manager at the Oakenshaw store, added: “We are all absolutely thrilled with the support and generosity we have received from the public to help others in need and this is all helping us to reach our target of ten million meals to donate. As such a big company we believe it is really important to help those in need and use our scale for good.”

On average more than 140 people a month are turning to Redditch Food Bank for support with many finding themselves in crisis due to delays in benefit payments or because of low incomes.
