Ex-sewage Redditch site report goes missing

A RISK assessment covering a contaminated former sewage works earmarked as a building site for 200 homes has gone missing.

The document describes a site of ‘medium risk’ on land between Pumphouse Lane and Church Road as containing heavy metals, carcinogens and ‘persistent organic pollutants’.

Although a ‘desk top’ risk assessment suggested that there should be no significant risks to the site it suggested that nevertheless an ‘intrusive’ one should be carried out.

David Rose of the Webheath Action Group (WAG), which together with the Bentley Area Action Group (BAAG) is fighting plans to build 3,400 new homes elsewhere in the area said: “These old sewage works potential go back to the old needlemaking industries when they used arsenics. It was also used as a dumping ground for ‘night soil’ – human waste.”

The document had been produced by developers Taylor Wimpey when they first sought planning permission to build there and should have been passed to Redditch borough council.

“This document is crucial; it should be on the council website and now Taylor Wimpey have permission to build there it’s the council’s job to monitor the work and make sure it meets all their conditions,” he added.

The issue has been raised with local county councillor Robin Lunn (Lab, Redditch North) who has asked the council’s planning department for an explanation of its whereabouts.

A council spokesperson said they had asked the applicant’s agent to supply the missing document and as soon as they had the information they would publish it on their website with the remaining documents.
