Faith leaders walk the same path

FAITH leaders from all religions are set to join together for an event designed to promote unity.

The Faiths Together event, set to take place on April 26, has been organised by a small working group comprising residents from across the community.

Borough council leader Bill Hartnett said following a Unity Through Diversity conference held last year by Redditch One World Link, it was agreed it would be a good idea if all the faith groups could get to know and understand each other better.

The event will start at 2pm at St Stephen’s Church in the town centre, with those involved walking to the mosque in Jinnah Road then to the Ridgeway where the Sikh community meet and worship at a Guru Nanak Gurdwara and where information will be available about Hinduism. It will finish between 5pm and 5.30pm with a shared vegetarian meal provided by the Sikh community.

Coun Hartnett said: “This idea was planned last year long before the tragic events in Pakistan and France. We think it is more important than ever to hold this event now and we hope the event will be supported by as many people as possible.

“We believe the Redditch community has more that unites us together than can ever divide us.

“We want to give this opportunity to learn, understand and celebrate different faiths so that we can be united through our diversity.”

He added the group hoped it would become an annual event in Redditch, attending different faith centres each time.
