Festival success sparks calls for return of Redditch carnival procession

A CALL has gone out to re-start the town’s carnival procession after the amazing success of the Redditch bandstand community festival.

The appeal came from Tommy Wilson of Wilson’s funfair which coincided with the event in the town centre last weekend.

Mr Wilson, who donated £500 in holiday vouchers to the winner of the festival’s fancy dress competition and a further £250 to Mayor Pattie Hill’s charity fund, said: “It’s been a fantastic day – the town’s people have come out to enjoy themselves and the atmosphere speaks for itself.

“It’s wonderful for the town and what I would like to see over the next six to 12 months is the setting up of a proper carnival committee involving the borough council, the traders and the Town Centre Partnership to bring back the carnival with a proper great procession.”

Council Leader Councillor Bill Hartnett (Lab, C Hill) said: “I remember the carnival and we are open for discussion on this. I understand it stopped due to lack of support from the community with no new people coming through to work on the carnival committee.

“However if thee is anyone interested in taking it up again we would be happy to discuss it.”
