THE ROMANS are set to invade Alcester next month.

Between Thursday and Sunday, July 3 to 6, the town will be hosting its first ever Roman Festival.

There will be a series of Roman events on offer including displays of combat skills by re-enactors, craft demonstrations, talks on Roman Alcester, Roman Cookery and the bloodier side of Shakespeare’s Roman plays from an RSC expert.

There will also be a parade up Alcester High Street and best selling author Lindsey Davis will also be talking about Falco, her Roman detective, and signing copies of her books in the Town Hall on the Saturday.

Roman Alcester museum will be displaying finds from the Bleachfield Street and Stratford Road digs carried out in recent years and there will be a school competition to design the best mosaic.

Laurence Thatcher, chairman of Alcester Heritage Trust which runs the museum, said: “We hope to make this a celebration for all the people of Alcester.”

Tickets for talks being held in the Town Hall and St Benedict’s High School will be available from Globe House. There is a small charge for the Lindsey Davis talk but all other events are free. Visit www.romanalcester.org for the full programme.
