Fraudsters target Alcester residents for £16,000

FRAUDSTERS made three attempts to con residents in Alcester out of sums totalling £16,000.

All three happened last Saturday (June 4) and were quickly reported to police.

In the first case, which happened at 12 noon on the same day an elderly resident of Malin Court, Alcester, received a call from a man claiming he was from Hammersmith Police Station in London.

He said he had arranged for a taxi to take the lady to the Kingfisher Shopping Centre in Redditch where she would need to exchange £9,000 worth of Euros with them.

The lady said that she would order her own taxi and put the phone down on the fraudster.

A police spokesman said: “Thankfully the lady and the taxi firm contacted police about their concerns before anything was done.”

In the second incident three hours later a householder in Sherwell Drive, Alcester received a call from a man also claiming to be from Hammersmith Police.

He explained he needed to sort out an issue with stolen debit cards to the value of £7,000, however the person receiving the call quickly decided that this was in fact a bogus call and put the phone down.

Earlier in the day, at 8am, a Throckmorton Road resident in Alcester had received a call from a man stating he was from the Inland Revenue HMRC. The householder quickly ended the call and contacted police.
