Fund-raisers place defib kit at fire station

LIFE-SAVING equipment has been installed at the town’s fire station thanks to the fund-raising efforts of a borough couple.

The defibrillator, which shocks the heart back to a normal rhythm, has been fixed to the outside of the Birmingham Road station allowing it be accessed by the public in an emergency.

It was donated by the Charlotte and Craig Saving Hearts Foundation, which also funded a cabinet for the device.

The charity was set up by Robert and Maggie Underwood after they lost Charlotte Marie Prentice to Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome aged 16 and son Craig to a cardiac arrest aged 17.

The pair tirelessly campaign to install defibrillators in schools and public places across Redditch and beyond.

Station commander Phil Berry said: “It is great for the community of Redditch that we have been chose to give the public access to such an important device in the case of an emergency.

“We are honoured they have chosen us; defibrillators save lives and to be able to provide access to something which gives people a fighting chance in an emergency is brilliant for the station and the community.”

Mrs Underwood added: “There was nowhere really close by that had a defibrillator like this which the public could access.

“We want to make sure the whole of Redditch is covered, so we thought outside the fire station would be the anchor point.

“Charlotte always had a thing for firemen so it was the perfect place really.”

She added: “If it saves one life then it is worth all the hard work.”
