Funding helps tell Edith Cavell's story

THE STORY of a nurse who inspired a Redditch charity will be told thanks to £91,000 funding.

A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund will enable more research into the life and death of Edith Cavell, a heroic First World War nurse who saved the lives of soldiers from both sides and helped 200 Allied troops escape from Belgium.

The project launched by Cavell Nurses’ Trust, a charity based in the borough which provides support to nurses in need, will take place over the next 18 months. Volunteers will take part in extensive research which will be shared through events and workshops as well as heritage trails and exhibitions across the UK.

There will also be a dedicated website which will include images, information and audio memories of the descendants of those helped by Edith.

A further £50,000 from the Government is set to help restore her grave in Norwich Cathedral.

Trust chairman Simon Knighton said: “Our plans to increase public awareness of the history and values embodied in nurse Edith Cavell herself will be of enormous assistance to the Trust and we are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for supporting this.”

Carole Souter, chief executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, added: “Edith Cavell was and continues to be an inspiration across the world.

“The centenary of the First World War provides a moment not only to explore the incredible bravery she demonstrated in order to help others but also her outstanding professional achievements and legacy she has left for modern day nursing.”
