Headless Cross set for May Day fun

SPRING has well and truly sprung across the borough and what better way to mark it then by strolling down to Headless Cross Green on Bank Holiday Monday (May 2) for the annual May Fayre.

The event, hosted by Headless Cross Community Orchard, will offer the usual blend of traditional entertainment and homegrown stalls, cider bar, free games and children’s activities.

But the highlight of the year is the annual scarecrow contest, where families are encouraged to bring their own scarecrows, or create them there on the day.

Scarecrow judge Wurzel Duckpond encourages participants to turn get stuck in and create a scarecrow from straw and farmyard clothes to help scare the crows away from his apple trees.

A fair swap is on offer too, with a call for Redditch’s green-fingered gardeners to exchange plants on a Plant Share stall while gardeners with a glut of plants are encouraged to swap their surplus. To kick things off, local nursery Botany Bay has donated a selection of bedding plants that gardeners can exchange their unwanted plants for.

Local clog-dancers Nancy Butterfly will kick off the proceedings at 11am with the traditional maypole dance due to be performed at 12 noon by Headless Cross Brownies, accompanied by Arrow Valley Brass Band.

The event,, which will run until 3pm, will be decorated by handmade bunting made by children from St Lukes First School, the Everywomans Circle, and other community members. The event includes stalls with food and crafts, and community groups.
