Helping create a healthy appetite

IT’S hard to escape the message of growing obesity and all the health problems associated with it, from diabetes to heart disease.

But one Redditch woman is proving that eating healthily needn’t be a burden. Not only is it good for you, but it’s fun and tastes good too.

Fay Yeng is the brains behind the Yum Tum Club, a community interest company which is already blazing a trail around Redditch schools and inspiring residents near and far through her food experience workshops.

“They say that food is the way to a man’s heart but it’s also the way to the heart of everyone and to the very heart of the community,” said Fay.

“People just get so excited when they smell and taste food. It’s the missing experience that really makes a get-together memorable.”

Taking inspiration from other cultures, she’s developed recipes that bring healthy eating right into the heart of the family and not only press all the taste buttons but also come within budget too.

“It’s a question of really getting the message out there,” said Fay.

“It’s a case of breaking downs peoples’ perceptions that healthy eating is complicated, boring or hard.”

One success was the ‘Power Bar Challenge’ backed by Redditch Borough Council, which saw a group of people, using whole ingredients, including nuts and seeds, making a product, packaging it and then selling it at outdoor events like the Morton Stanley Festival.

“It took minutes to make and was a huge success,” said Fay. “We also do brain boosting food for exam times, spice workshops and more – it’s a multi-sensory experience.”
