Huge blaze hits industrial estate

BLACK smoke could be seen billowing across Redditch as firefighters tackled a huge blaze at an industrial estate.

Crews from across the county were trying to put out the fire which is believed to have started in a workshop at RM Contractors on Pipers Road in the Park Farm Industrial Estate.

Police are at the site and have closed off Washford Drive, as well as any pedestrian entrances to the estate.

West Mercia Police have urged people to keep away from the area.

Ambulance crews are in attendance and one person has been taken to the nearby Alexandra Hospital with facial injuries.

Steve Lloyd, who works as a supervisor at Quality Springs next door to R M Contractors, said a member of staff saw the blaze through a window and alerted everyone.

“The fire took hold that quickly the building started to go up in flames and we were concerned it would start to interfere with our building.

“We evacuated the building, I went back to check everyone was out and we then took a roll call in the car park of the 15 employees.”

He added they left about 12.30pm and have been waiting at Greggs on Washford Drive ever since.

“We understand the fire may have now spread to the building on the other side of RM Contractors.

“We are due to finish work at 2pm and have been told by police officers that it will be at least another couple of hours before we can go back and collect our cars.”
