AN INSPIRATIONAL girl from Matchborough cut off 12 inches of her hair to donate to charity.
And now she is hoping to raise the £350 required to make a wig for children who have lost their own through cancer treatment.
Sophie Dixon made the brave decision after seeing a story about another little girl who had cancer and had lost her hair.
“She asked me if it would ever grow back,” said Jamie, Sophie’s mother.
“I told her that the little girl was very poorly and her medicine made her lose her hair.
“I explained it would grow back eventually but sometimes people have their own hair cut short and send it to a special place where they can make wigs for poorly children.”
It was after this conversation that Sophie found the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair.
The nine-year-old, who will attend St Bede’s Middle School from September, said goodbye to her waist length locks last Sunday (August 2) as her auntie Hannah, a hairdresser, wielded the scissors.
Along with the hair itself, Sophie has raised £270 through sponsorship which will be donated to the charity to help pay for a wig to be made.
“When the day came I was feeling extremely proud of her,” said Jamie, “but I was also a little sad to see all her beautiful hair cut off.” However, Sophie said: “I’m very happy as it will be helping poorly children who have lost their own hair because they’re not very well.”
Mum Jamie has set up a special email account to arrange donations to help Sophie meet her fundraising target of £350.
