Judge says pair are ‘disgraceful’ for officer abuse

TWO YOUNG men who abused a police officer have been handed six-month community orders.

Daniel Brittle, of Woodrow Centre in Redditch, and Nathan Simmonds from Worcester, were both charged with obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty, with Simmonds also being sentenced for using threatening words or behaviour.

Officers were on patrol in Broad Street, Worcester, when they noticed a youth burning something in his hand before throwing it to the floor, Worcester Magistrates Court heard last Friday (August 15).

PC Wate approached the youngster, who was Simmonds’ brother, before both the 20-year-old and Brittle, 18, walked over to the officer, became abusive to him and refused to move away.

The pair continued to obstruct him and shout slurs before Simmonds was detained against a shop window and arrested for a public disorder.

As the defendant was about to be handcuffed he broke free and ran down Broad Street with Brittle before they were eventually caught, the court also heard.

Prosecutor Adrian Jones told the court that Simmonds said in interview that he attempted to act as a guardian when he saw police talking to his younger brother in the city centre.

Brittle was ordered to complete 12 hours at the Senior Attendance Centre as part of his order, with Simmonds ordered to do 24 hours.

They were also each ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

District Judge Nigel Cadbury said: “Sometimes young lads like you think you are above the law and when you’re in a group you do what you want.

“It’s utterly disgraceful.”
