A COMMONWEALTH Judo champion visited Studley pupils to talk to them about his career struggles.

Tom Davis, who in 2005 won gold at the Commonwealth Games as well as the British Judo Championships, visited Studley High School as part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport project.

The scheme aims to boost confidence, change behaviours and improve life skills with the help of sporting stars.

Mr Davis worked with some Year 7 pupils on the importance of team work and communication to be successful in both sport and the wider world, while Year 11 GCSE physical education students were given a speech on the importance of never giving up.

The sporting star gave his own examples of disappointment including missing out on selection for both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics due to a succession of injuries.

He said: “As long as you focus on your dreams and goals, surround yourself with positive people and don’t take any notice of negativity, you can be whatever you want to be.

“It is how we strive for goals that makes us people.”
