Her loss is a big gain for charity

AN INSPIRATIONAL youngster has donated 14cm of her hair to a children’s cancer charity in memory of her childhood friend who sadly lost his fight with cancer two years ago.

Kind-hearted Amy Workman donated her luscious locks to the Little Princess Trust after a trip to the Winyates’ Scissors salon on Saturday (August 29).

The charity provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair due to lifesaving treatment.

The 15-year-old, who has previously raised over £400 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, was inspired on her fund-raising journey when close friend, Jay Demetriou, passed away in 2013.

Amy’s mum, Sarah, said the death of Jay made her realise just how precious life is and inspired her to help cancer sufferers.

“She shaved her head not only to donate it but to prove to those who have lost their hair – not to worry about what anyone thinks,” said Sarah.

“There is always going to be people who will try and put you down but everyone is beautiful in their own way.”

The Arrow Vale High School student said knowing that her hair would put a smile on a child’s face makes her feel great.

“She is one of the bravest people I know,” added Sarah. “I was terrified for her but am extremely proud.”

Amy, who was surrounded by both her and Jay’s friends and family, first had her ponytail lopped off by a salon stylist then Jay’s mum, Mandi, took over the shears and shaved her hair down to a grade eight.

“It was a lovely day,” Mandi said. “It kept Jay’s memory alive and certainly brought back some memories.
