VOLUNTEERS are now clutching the keys to their new emergency response vehicle, after raising enough cash to buy it.

The Redditch Community First Responders, who give up their spare time to be on call in case of an emergency, launched a public appeal in February after their 4×4 failed its MoT.

The car required work that would total more than its value but the 12-strong team were given the opportunity to purchase a fully kitted out vehicle from an ambulance trust for £4,000.

As part of its annual fund-raising day at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre on Saturday (April 18) the group officially launched its new all-terrain vehicle.

Kelly O’Brien, the group’s fund-raiser, said the launch of the new car meant the group was now able to offer a higher level of support to West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Of the responders’ three marked cars, two are 4x4s which means they can reach some of the most challenging locations regardless of the conditions or weather.

She added: “Not only did we manage to raise £4,000 for our new car but we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the public at our Kingfisher event.”

The group, who are notified when a 999 call is made and are often first on the scene to administer first aid, raised £1,462.17 on Saturday.

Barclays Matched Fundraising programme will take the figure to £2,462.17 which is almost enough to equip two new volunteer lifesavers for the town.
