Mayor impressed by students at Ridgeway

THE future looks bright for Redditch if it’s in the hands of students at Ridgeway Academy – that’s the verdict of borough Mayor Councillor Pattie Hill.

Her comments came after seeing the work of three pupils who used Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM) to develop an ‘Urban City Landscape’ marrying Redditch’s heritage in the needle industry with a vision of the future.

The work of the after-school club was supported by The Ogden Trust, a national organisation aimed at raising the profile of physics in schools and which is based at Ridgeway, and Britten Street-based Inkberrow Design Centre which bought more than 150,000 needles from the old Redditch Ashleigh Works when it shut down.

With IDC providing design input and the Ogden Trust providing science support the students, who earned Bronze Crest Awards and Arts Mark Explorer Awards for their efforts, presented their models to the Mayor.

Coun Hill said: “Their work is absolutely stunning and it means the future is bright for our town. We’ve just got to make sure we keep them here because with talent like this they will really put Redditch on the map.”
