Mediation hope for young people in Redditch

Redditch Editorial 4th Mar, 2017   0

REDDITCH’S Nightstop charity has teamed up with the one in Wyre Forest and Bromsgrove’s Basement Project to offer a mediation service to young people and their parents in a bid to prevent homelessness.

The Three Charities have declared March as ‘Mediation Month’ and are working together to spread the word that, with a little support and help, conflict can often be resolved and in many cases avoid a young person being left homelessness.

The charities said although conflict was a fact of life and most families would experience arguments at some point, they can usually be resolved.

But, they added, in some cases they can get worse and this is where family mediation is used. It is a planned process which allows all parties to talk and resolve their difficulties with the help of UK Mediation trained staff who have a nationally recognised qualification to practice as mediators.

Jackie Hooper, from The Basement Project, said: “All too often, by the time young people present themselves at our services for help they have reached crisis point and the option to return home is not viable.

“We hope by publicising mediation more widely during the month of March we can help both young people and parents/guardians to avoid this crisis.”

Susan Sadler, Redditch Nightstop, added, “The service we offer is confidential, non-judgemental and independent of any other service.

“We speak to each of the parties involved individually and then carry out one or two joint sessions until the situation is resolved.

“This can be spread over two to three weeks.”

And Judith Ford, from Wyre Forest Nightstop said “Mediation is a voluntary service where people involved in conflict are helped to resolve their problems collaboratively.”

The three charities are hoping schools across North Worcestershire will help them promote the service and take advantage of this preventative service.
