THE MOTHER of a baby who tragically died aged just five weeks old is set to raise money for the hospital which cared for him in his last days.
Daniel Grogan was born six weeks early and diagnosed with truncus arteriosus, a rare heart condition where there is only a single blood vessel coming out of the left and right ventricles instead of two.
He was transferred from the Worcestershire Royal Hospital to Redditch and London before having an operation at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He had to undergo further surgery a week later when a hole developed in his heart, but sadly he did not survive.
Now seven years on, Katherine Whitby is set to shave all her hair off tomorrow (Saturday) in exchange for donations to the intensive care unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
A disco she has organised will start at 8pm at the Alvechurch Sports and Social Club, with the headshave at 9pm and the highest donator getting to do the first part of the trim.
Katherine told the Standard she chose a headshave as it was ‘quite a big thing for a woman to do’. Her mother also shaved her head during her battle with cancer, which she lost aged just 34, so she will also be thinking of her during the challenge.
“I am quite excited about it but also a little bit nervous. I wanted to do something people would sponsor me for.” she said.
“I want to give something back to the hospital now as they were brilliant with him.
“I want to thank my two step-daughters Lauren and Chloe Grogan and my partner James for supporting me.”
