A BALLOON launched by a Redditch schoolgirl was found nearly 1,200 miles away in Norway.

Ruby Sheldon, now in Year 5 at Woodfield Academy, set off the balloon as part of a launch at the summer fête before the summer break.

Pupils were challenged to see whose got the furthest, with a cut off date of early September. Ruby, who won a 42 inch Panasonic Smart television, was astounded after receiving a note back from Trondheim, which is 1,173 miles from the borough.

A school spokeswoman said: “In July we held our summer fête with many stalls and competitions which, with contributions from Barclays Bank, raised nearly £2,000 for Friends of Woodfield. One was a balloon launch – Miss Rachel Badlan, who organised the stall, was expecting a balloon to have come down perhaps in Leamington Spa.

“Money raised at the fête will go to various projects including the start of building an outdoor activity course next to the playgrounds.”
