REDDITCH Borough Council is to reduce its customer service opening hours in the Town Hall following its executive committee on Tuesday (June 7).
It means it will only be open on the first Saturday of every month instead of every Saturday.
The changes are set to start in September and are intended to utilise existing staff and reduce costs without making redundancies.
It is estimated the move will make a £7,000 saving.
“We have found from our surveys that the same people are visiting the service and because we will take the time to let them know of the changes they will know when to go so there will be no risk of them going and no-one being there,” said Council Leader Councillor Bill Hartnett (Lab, Church Hill).
“Currently on a Saturday there are often staff on hand who do not see anyone
However Leader of the Conservative Group, Juliet Brunner (Con, M’boro), said: “I am extremely disappointed and surprised this was not brought up as part of the budget before the election.
“I believe this will disadvantage people who come in on a Saturday.
“60 per cent of people pay in cash – and one of our strategic aims is for people to be ‘financially independent’ – how does this help when you are withdrawing one of their abilities to do this?”
