Our web story helps reunite goddaughter

A STORY published by the Standard three weeks ago has helped a diamond Redditch couple bridge a 122 mile gap to be reunited with their goddaughter.

In our September 25 edition we reported how Sheila and Doug Basson, of Forge Mill Road, were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on September 27.

Following our report, their goddaughter Jane Owens, who now lives in Wirral, stumbled across the link to our story at redditchstandard.co.uk after ‘Googling’ her long lost relatives with her mother, Joan.

“My mother and I take a walk along the promenade every Sunday morning and we got talking about family members and people we used to know,” Jane said.

“Doug and Sheila’s names came up and as we hadn’t heard anything from them for a long time I decided to Google them.”

So last Sunday (October 11) over a cup of coffee in their regular haunt on New Brighton pier, the mother and daughter searched for their old friends and were astonished when the Standard’s report came up.

“I said to my mother, look at this – it was just so weird, it was like it was meant to be,” said Jane.

“It really was bizarre, I did the search and then there they were – we were really pleased.”

Jane, who is now 62, presented Sheila with a horseshoe on her wedding day in 1955 and has happy memories of her godparents visiting her family in Merseyside, where she moved at the age of nine.

The Standard’s Beth Wright was able to pass on Jane’s mobile telephone number to the Bassons who were overjoyed at the news.

Sheila said: “We have fond memories of the day and of Jane, who must have only been about two-years-old at the time, carrying a horseshoe for me – I may even still have it somewhere.”
