Parents appeal to make team a roaring success

PARENTS of children playing in a new junior football team are calling on businesses to help them revamp their clubhouse in time for for the new season next month.

Mayfly Tigers were formed earlier this year with 30 children competing in three sides from under 7s to under 9s.

And they have now struck a deal that will see them play their home games at Hewell Cricket Club in Tardebigge – as long as they can complete the makeover of the clubhouse in time.

Members of Redditch Cricket Club had been using the ground but were dealt a blow when it was broken into. That prompted an approach from parents of the young footballers offering their DIY skills in return for a place to play.

Marie Eggington, whose son Sam plays for Mayfly Tigers under 8s, said: “We’re over the moon to have found Hewell Cricket Club and would like to thank Daren Field at Redditch Cricket Club for his help.

“The challenge is to get enough funding to renovate the clubhouse by September and secure sponsorship so that we can sustain the three teams for the coming season. Any help from local residents or businesses would help the boys continue to play football. We need help with building materials, kit and raffle prizes.”

Coun Rebecca Blake, who represents Greenlands, is backing the plucky parents, many of whom have undergone extra training to equip them for running the football club.

“Credit to the parents for not only attempting to refurbish the clubhouse but for starting the teams in the first place.” she said.

“They’re paying for courses out of their own pockets and volunteering week in, week out so that their children can have something to do that keeps them off the streets. They just need some support from the local community to be able to keep up their good work.

“Given there isn’t enough for children and young people to do it’s in everyone’s interests for them to have meaningful activities. I hope they will be well supported”.

Anyone able to support the club’s efforts should email [email protected] for more information.
