Patient safety comes first say health chiefs

HEALTH chiefs say patient safety is at the heart of their Future of Acute Hospital Services in Worcestershire programme after agreeing to push ahead with the project.

The move comes after concerns were raised by the West Midlands Clinical Senate that the plan which called into question the sustainability and clinical safety of some of its aspects.

This had caused GPs across the county to question the ability of the local health trust to solve these issues with some proposing that they look elsewhere, outside the county, for sustainable and safe health provision.

However, pledging to take action to address these worries Harry Turner, chairman of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are delighted that all of the partners involved in the Future of Acute Hospital Services in Worcestershire Programme have made a commitment to work together to deliver the proposed model for emergency surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics and gynaecology, and further developing plans for urgent care.

“Patient safety is at the very heart of the proposals put forward – which are to ensure safe and sustainable hospital services for the whole of Worcestershire.

“We look forward to working with our colleagues from all three Clinical Commissioning Groups, the ambulance service and other partners to ensure that there is a clinically safe and sustainable model for patients in Worcestershire that can be consulted on as soon as possible.”

Last week the West Midlands Clinical Senate published its review of the proposed clinical model. Plans for the majority of the proposals including emergency surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology were supported.

However it advised that further work needed to be undertaken on the detail of the urgent care proposals.

Jo Newton, chair of the trust’s programme board said: “The priority of the Programme Board is about doing what is right for the patients and the people of Worcestershire and we all have the patients’ interests at heart.”
