Race against bulldozers

ORGANISERS of a campaign to save an historic Redditch building admit time is running out if they are to stop its demolition.

But they still want people to pledge money just in case they can keep the bulldozers at bay and create an arts, crafts and heritage centre.

The Point in Time campaign is hoping to raise £1million to buy the former Abel Morrall needle factory next to the town centre railway station. But their deadline passed on Monday (July 14) and work has now started on clearing the site a brick at a time.

Sharon Burton-Fletcher, who is leading the appeal, said: “It is a respectful dismantle so the fight isn’t over yet. While the building is still standing we still have hope but for every day that goes by, another few bricks go missing.”

The campaigners want to delay the demolition to give them more time to raise the funds needed to buy the site. Initial start-up funding has already been acquired from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

If successful they plan to convert the site into a working museum, preserving some of the techniques and traditions. A Centre of Craft Excellence would also be established.

She added: “The centre would become the envy of the county and would sit at the heart of Redditch’s creative community.

“All we need are a few extra months. Redditch has earned the right to showcase its arts, crafts and heritage. We have had a lot of support we need to turn that support into cash.”

Residents are being urged to pledge £1 by texting ‘needle’ to 64343. Visit www.pointintime.co.uk for more information on the campaign and how to donate.
