HUNDREDS were able to see and hear the bells last weekend as part of the free Heritage Open Day event.

The bell tower at St Leonard’s at Beoley Church was opened for residents to enjoy as part of the nation wide event which enabled people to take a look at some Britain’s most historic places for free.

With a bell ringing theme to the event the bell ringers decided to open the tower for the first time and allowed resident to have a go at ringing the bells for themselves.

The Secretary of Bell Ringers, Rhiannon Walpole, said: “The day went really went. We had a lot of people giving it a go for themselves but it takes a long term to learn. i have been ringing for 20-years and still aren’t very good at it.

“Having seen it in a local ringers magazine we thought it would be a great idea to open up the tower.”

The bell ringers are planning to open the tower every year from now on but have said residents are welcome to join them on Thursday evenings between 7.30pm and 9pm.
