PATIENTS JOINED staff at the Alexandra Hospital to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the cardiac rehabilitation service.

Those who have taken the exercise classes, workshops and seminars at the cardio unit since its opening in 1996 joined the team for the party, including Bill Burnman who was one of the first to walk through its doors following a heart operation.

The 81-year-old, of Lickey End in Bromsgrove, said: “This service means everything to me, I’ve got an extra third of my life back partly due to the fantastic work that’s done here. The staff are amazing, and what they’ve done for me in terms of exercise motivation and good advice is remarkable.”

Linda Barratt, cardiac respiratory specialist nurse, heads the service which has helped thousands of people over the years and currently has about 100 patients from Redditch and Bromsgrove using it.

She said: “We’re really proud of our work and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my years here. It’s really rewarding to see patients blossom and to know they’re looking after their heart in the best possible way.”
