Redditch code-breaker breaks Rotary record

THERE was a changing of the guard at Redditch Rotary Club last week when Philip Roberts handed over the presidency to Peter Williams.

Reflecting on his year in the top job Mr Roberts said: “Two things really stick out for me; we had a major fund-raising Christmas concert which brought in £2,800 for St Basil’s, the charity for the homeless, and the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra.

“We’ve also raised our profile in the town by getting involved in various community events like the Morton Stanley Festival and more recently we raised for money for Prostate Cancer UK with an event in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

“Another highlight was the visit of Charlotte Webb who worked as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park in the Second World War. She attracted a record number of visitors and it was an exceptional day, and we’ll be following this up with a visit to Bletchley Park in September.”

He added that over the past three years the Rotarians had raised in excess of £20,000 which had been passed on to local and other charities.
