COUNCILLORS are to formally extend the support of the residents of Redditch to the people of Pakistan following the recent terrorist atrocity in the country.
Borough council leader Bill Hartnett and Mayor Pat Witherspoon will send a joint letter on behalf of the town to the high commissioner for Pakistan and the borough’s main mosque, expressing their sympathy and support for those affected by the massacre of 132 children and nine others at a school in Peshawar by Taliban militants.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Redditch Borough Council’s executive committee on Tuesday (December 16) given the significant number of people with connections to Pakistan living in the town.
Deputy council leader Greg Chance said: “It’s a really awful tragedy that has outraged the world, not just the Pakistani community, but our thoughts and concerns should be passed on to those affected.”
Coun Hartnett added: “It’s horrific and many residents in Redditch may have relatives over there. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”
