Redditch men cycle more than a thousand miles for charity

FROM eight year-olds to eighty-year olds, the people of Redditch came out to support two youth leaders in their attempt to cycle more than a thousand miles in just 24 hours.

On Friday (July 22) Carl Maeers and Mike Chart saddled up on a pair of static bikes at the Tesco in Oakenshaw to pedal 1,020 miles – the equivalent distance from Redditch Town Hall to l’Hotel de ville in Auxerre, the French town twinned with Redditch – a feat which they managed in 24 hours, 7 minutes and 58 seconds.

The pair had called for members of the public to help them reach their target by joining them on a third static bike and Mike said: “We would like to thank all those willing volunteers who gave of their time to ride a few miles, or in some cases many, with a special thanks to those brave souls who stayed right through the night.

“It is certain that without the efforts of these volunteers we would not have succeeded.”

The youngest participant was Hannah Phillips, aged 8 and the oldest was Mr Keith Morley, aged 80 .

A total of £1000 was raised by the cyclists – despite the challenges they faced throughout the ride- which will be split between local charity Fusion Youth Group, based at Southcrest Evangelical Church in Redditch, and the nationwide MS Society.

“The event was a tremendous success,” Mike added.

“Over the years I have taken part in many endurance events – triathlons, marathons, long distance swimming and cycle races but nothing I have done before has ever left me so exhausted and so elated as this.”
