Redditch MP calls for fresh hospital services review

REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley has called for a fresh review into hospital services across the region after it was revealed that the original was flawed.

In a joint statement made with Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid and Stratford MP Nadhim Zahawi, she said it was vital residents received the best solution.

Mrs Lumley said: “We have been clear from the start that residents must be consulted swiftly on any changes.

“Recently there have been calls to repeat the entire review of hospital services reconfiguration. Naturally, we have been concerned about the implications on the quality of patient care if the consultation were to be delayed by the Joint Services Review team.

“However, since then there have been a number of important developments. Firstly, NHS England has identified that ‘further work needs to be done to complete the business case, before their approval for the start of public consultation’. Secondly, we have spoken to Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group who have also raised concerns. Thirdly, we’ve continued to listen to the views of local residents, the ‘Save The Alex’ campaign, and leaders of local councils.

“Taking all of these things developments into consideration, we believe that there is a case for a fresh review as long as it is swift and does not put our local health services at risk.

“We ask that the option for University Hospitals Birmingham to take over some services is properly considered. We were disappointed previously when this option was not fully explored. This process must be open and transparent in a time of great uncertainty for local people.

“Residents of Redditch, Bromsgrove and Stratford-on-Avon must receive the best outcome from this process. This issue cannot be kicked into the long grass or solved with a short-term fix. We need a long-term solution that ensures the future of quality healthcare at our local hospital.”

Neal Stote, chairman of the Save The Alex campaign, said he was delighted with the news.

“Over 400 people have signed our Petition calling for Jeremy Hunt to order a repeat of the clinical review of the options for the re-configuration of hospital services within Worcestershire and that this repeat must include option 2 – the Birmingham Option.”

“I am pleased MPs have reconsidered their position and are now also calling for option 2 to be fully worked up, an option we all were promised last year.”
