THE Studley Heritage Group is appealing for anyone who worked in needle manufacturing in the village to come and tell their story next Saturday (August 13) at a special open day at the village hall.
The aim is to create a permanent record of the influence needle manufacturing had on creating Studley but to do this they need the help of the people who worked in the industry.
The group wants to hear their stories, their experiences and memories of working in the factory, as an out worker or anyone who worked in any way in the industry, including cleaners and office staff.
Hazel Wright, who obtained lottery funding for the project, said: “They don’t have to be first-hand memories either, but stories past down to relatives are just as relevant and old photographs and momentoes would also be welcome.”
Studley became a world famous centre for the production of needles and was once a major employer, at one time with more than 3,000 people actively working in the industry.
“By telling the story of the importance of needle making it will help present and future generations to appreciate the ancestry of the village. It will be a permanent record of the way we were before the last person locked the door of the last needle factory,” added Hazel. “We hope as many people as possible will come and share their experience with us over a cup of coffee or tea.”
The event runs from 10.30am to 2pm and members of the heritage group will be there with a cup of tea and waiting to hear stories of the industry.
