BIG-hearted Redditch people has responded with open hearts and open wallets and purses to an emergency appeal for the earthquake victims of Nepal.
Members of Redditch Lions, holding a one day collection for the disaster relief in the Kingfisher Centre on Friday said they had been touched by people’s generosity.
“We’ve had cheques, £10 notes, £5 notes and even some £20 notes as well as lots and lots of coins, said Wendy Pettifer of the Lions.
“People have been saying ‘we’re doing it for the Gurkhas’ they’ve stood by us in the past and we’ll stand by them.”
Club secretary Bill Southworth said the money would be used to send out water purifying containers to give the survivors of the earthquake fresh drinking water.
“The Lions have sent out 250 of these today (Friday) and they are absolutely fantastic – they will provide a family of five with clean drinking water for a year,” he said.
By close of play on Friday the Lions had raised over £1,000 for the earthquake victims of Nepal which will be used to buy five of the jerrycan containers.
