Redditch runner ended up with more than stitch at the London Marathon

A REDDITCH marathon runner got a little more than she bargained for after completing the 26 gruelling miles in the capital.

In the build up to the London Marathon (April 24) The Standard reported how mother-and-son duo Stephanie Cox and Dylan Nolan, from Iplsey, were preparing to tackle the streets of the capital alongside fellow runner and family friend Jo Scott.

The three not only completed the marathon, all chalking up great times, but raised £2,326 on their Virgin Money Giving page alone for VICTA – a charity which helps blind and partially sighted children.

But it wasn’t the 26 miles that caused Steph a problem, it was the emergency surgery she needed on Wednesday (April 27) just 72 hours after completing the race.

It turned out Steph had appendicitis and the 42-year-old, who completed the marathon in just four hours and 12 minutes, was admitted into Worcester Royal 48 hours after running the race of her life.

Prior to the marathon, Steph had suffered a knee injury and said she was more concerned about how her knee would ‘hold up’ than anything else.

She said: “When I finished I was over the moon my knee had held out and just put my stiffness down to muscle-soreness.”

The following day Steph and Jo enjoyed a well-deserved day at a Stratford Spa but at around 5pm she started to fell unwell and went to A&E.

She said: “It did cross my mind it might be appendicitis but I didn’t think it was something you get as an older adult.”

But in just a few hours the condition was confirmed and she was sent to the operating theatre.

She added: “I’m on bed rest at the moment and can’t run for around two weeks. It’s certainly the perfect excuse to enjoy a recovery period.”
