STAFF at a Redditch school are paying tribute to a much-loved colleague and friend this weekend with a 26-mile walking challenge.

In memory of Mrs Helen Deaves, who passed away last year, staff from Skilts School will be setting off to walk the Arden Way on Saturday (July 2) in aid of St Richard’s Hospice.

The team from the school have been in training since January, building up fitness levels in preparation for the walk.

Walk leader Mark O’Neill said: “This is going to be a big challenge especially for those of us who are less active and I am very proud of the commitment displayed by everyone who has turned up for our practise walks.”

Headteacher Dominic Crompton said: “Helen was a wonderful teacher and a kind and caring woman who faced her illness with incredible bravery. Her passing affected a lot of people. As a school we felt strongly that we needed to raise some money for St Richard’s Hospice so that they can continue the invaluable work they do.

“St Richard’s Hospice provided Helen with the most wonderful care in her final weeks. They are a very special group of people who deliver a unique and individual level of physical and emotional care to patients and their loved ones.”

Mum-of-three Helen passed away in December last year. Her husband Antony said: “Helen loved working at Skilts School and we were all proud of her work in supporting vulnerable children.

“It’s wonderful to know that the staff and children are dedicating themselves to such a fantastic cause in her memory.”

The group undertaking the hike, which covers Henley in Arden, Ullenhall, Alcester and other Warwickshire villages, hope to collect at least £1,000 for the hospice which supported their friend.
