BOROUGH Mayor Councillor Joe Baker is to write a letter of condolences to the Mayor of Rouen in France following the killing of an 84 year-old priest by two men who claimed to be ‘IS soldiers’.

The attackers raided the church while the priest was saying Mass, taking Father Jacques Hamel and four other people hostage.

Police later surrounded the church and the BBC said shots were fired and that both hostages are now dead. It added that sources said the priest’s throat had been slit.

Coun Baker, whose letter will also be from Coun Bill Hartnett, the leader of Redditch council on behalf of the borough said: “I was very sad to hear yet again a sadistic attack in France today (Tuesday, July 26) and the killing of a 84 year old priest, a man of God and a good person.

“This is mindless and barbaric and has no place in any peaceful and decent society. On behalf of the leader of the council and myself I will be write a letter of condolence to the Mayor of that town.”
