RESIDENTS of Feckenham Road, Headless Cross took to the streets with gusto recently to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in style.
Organised by Rachel Evans, they managed to get the road closed off allowing residents to flood the street and party away for a full 12 hours.
“It was a fantastic day, and with the road closure the kids took full advantage of the freedom. We gave them some chalk and off they went playing traditional games, it was wonderful,” said Rachel.
A barn dance theme won the poll of the 170 households along the road and after the Indigo Arts Choir had started proceedings off the residents danced the day away to everything from The Beatles and Abba to the hits of today.
Local businesses donated gifts which were raffled off and the residents raised £931 to donate to local charity Nightstop, which finds homeless young people a place to stay for the night.
“We decided on Nightstop because it’s a Redditch charity and I know they are in desperate need. I find the idea of 16 to 25 year olds without a home quite heart-wrenching,” said Rachel, who also organises the Carols on the Green event at Christmas at Headless Cross.
“Merchants on Evesham Road turned up for the day too and very kindly supplied traditional fish and chips and donated every penny of their takings to the charity, which was fantastic.”
Such was the success of the day, and the community spirit it produced, that Rachel is now thinking of organising a Proms event, complete with Land of Hope and Glory and of course Jerusalem.
